Important Facts One Should Understand About Bed Bugs And The Problems That They Create

By Aidyn Huffman

Bed bugs get their common name from the fact that they hide away in small dark spaces of all sorts, including bed frames and mattresses and box springs. Hiding in beds keeps them close to their human hosts, from whom they drink blood, typically at night. These parasites date back to ancient days, and while they have at times been suppressed, they will likely never be eradicated completely.

The adult insect is about a quarter of an inch long and dark brown in color. Their bodies are flat, which makes it easy for them to slip into crevices and to hide in all sorts of small places. Because they can survive for long periods of time between feeding, an unoccupied room or dwelling can still have an infestation of the parasites.

These parasites were largely controlled after World War Two, and not a problem. This was chiefly because of the widespread use of pesticides made with DDT, which killed the pests very effectively. As pesticide usage became more limited in recent years, and international travel increased, there has been an increase in infestations.

The common belief that they are found only in dirty environments is a misconception. They can be found in any place where there are opportunities to hide and to have humans nearby to feed on. They can be transported in luggage and on clothing, so places with a lot of people coming and going, such as hotels, dormitories, and theaters, are common places where they may be found.

These insects generally feed when people are asleep, with a bite that is painless. Later on the bites may itch, and resemble mosquito or flea bites. Because of this resemblance, small itchy bites do not necessarily indicate the presence of this parasite. Finding the insects themselves, or definite signs of infestation, is the only way to know for sure.

Washing and drying on medium heat or higher will kill insects in clothing and other washable items such as stuffed toys. Generally they can be killed by both high and low temperatures. Items too large to be washed, such as mattresses and other furniture, can be encased in plastic bags. Insects trapped inside will die while the rest of the infested area is treated by other means.

A professional extermination company may be the best choice to get rid of an infestation. You should make sure the company you select has a good reputation and can furnish references from satisfied customers. Taking these steps will help ensure that bed bugs are eliminated entirely.
