Is There A Procedure That Cures Sinusitis?

By Francisco Guerrero

Is there a procedure that cures sinusitis? Sinusitis is the condition whereby the air-filled spaces of the facial bones are inflamed. There are four sets of facial sinuses consisting of the Maxillary which are over the top molars and behind the cheeks, the Frontal which is behind the forehead and two smaller ones, behind the nose, called the Ethmoid and Sphenoid.

Upper-respiratory infections, allergies, fungal infections, nasal polyps, a deviated septum and tooth abscesses all contribute to the onset of sinusitis. This condition is generally underestimated and wrongly diagnosed. Some cases resist conventional treatment regimes. In these cases, patients should seek consultation and management from an Oral and Maxillo-facial surgeon or an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist.

Tapping on healthy, clear sinuses by a health care worker will not cause pain. The name of this procedure is percussion. A light shone on healthy sinuses will transit a glow through them (trans-illumination). X-Rays, CT scans and MRI are non-invasive and painless methods of accurately demonstrating inflamed or thickened sinuses to varying degrees.

The sinus lining can be permanently damaged as a result of chronic sinusitis. If it is not cured, it can potentially lead to more serious conditions such as eye-infections, osteo-myelitis (deterioration of the bone due to infection), meningitis (infection of the spinal canal) and abscesses of the brain.

Topical steroids such as nasal-sprays and non-prescription pills may provide temporary relief or a complete cure. Two or three week courses of antibiotics or anti-fungal medicine are often prescribed to try to eradicate the infection and to reduce the inflamed tissues. A chronic sinus condition will certainly respond well to deviated septum correction surgery or the surgical removal of any nasal obstruction. When advisable, endoscopy, (the use of fiber-optics), is an alternative to invasive surgery with excellent results.

Fantastic results, ranging from temporary relief to ultimate cure, are achieved with treatments derived from homeopathic and natural therapeutics. Regular irrigation of the nasal passages is a simple, cost-effective and efficient means of preventing and treating sinusitis symptoms. Associated sinus pain can often be relieved effectively by inhaling steam and applying warm compresses to the facial areas. Sufficient water intake and avoiding dry, arid areas are healthy choices in sinus inflammation prevention. Yoga exercises which entail entail closing one nostril after the other during slow, sequential inhalations and exhalations facilitates opening of the nasal passages.

Eating garlic and horseradish, breathing in the vapor of pine oil and eucalyptus and menthol help diminish symptoms. Another non-invasive cure method is performed in two parts. It is reported that drinking 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water four times a day will stop sinus drainage within one week. The proponents of this method recommend building slowly to the full dose. The second part to this remedy is to contact colloidal silver directly to the mucosal linings.

A word of warning about treatment: long-term use of decongestants or home remedies may cause an acute attack of sinusitis to become chronic. It is advisable to seek a health care providers guidance if inflammation and drainage last longer than a two to three week period.
